How Do You Handle A Date With Bad Manners

You met your date in the parking lot of the restaurant and right before you walked in the building, your date hocked and spit on the sidewalk.

Once inside the restaurant, your date orders without even asking if you’re ready, eats with a full mouth, belches and passes gas at the table and then leaves you with the check while outside catching a smoke, in the non-smoking area.

How can one person be so rude? Was the person born in a barn? Maybe so. You just have to accept that some people are born and raised without learning what constitutes proper manners in today’s society. And some know how to act properly and make a conscious decision to behave the opposite just because they can. Regardless of the reasons, you need to set things straight if you even want to see this person again.

Redeeming Qualities

Obviously there is something about the person you like, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this article. You just wouldn’t talk to the person ever again. The worst thing you can do when confronted with a rude person you’d like to see again is to keep your feelings to yourself. If you ignore your first impulse, which is usually to say something like, “Uh, that was gross,” you’ll only reinforce the person’s behavior.

While you should never expect to change anyone, you should also never ignore your feelings. Any healthy relationship is based on communication and not telling the person how you feel is essentially the same as lying. You’re holding back the truth that you find the person’s behavior disgusting and unattractive.

Be Nice, But Honest

Don’t be rude to your date, but do let the person know that their rude behavior is less than accepted. You might flash a look or just make a sound of disgust, but don’t hide it. Let it really be known. And repeat the behavior each time the person repeats their rude characteristics. They’ll get the message eventually.

In any case, the person will react in one of two ways. If the person is into you and wants to see you again, they’ll make an effort to act more properly around you. If the person scoffs at your displeasure and keeps on acting like a pig, it’s obvious that your date doesn’t respect you.

A date is a time when you’re trying to get to know another person with the hopes of starting a more meaningful relationship. It’s hard to get to know someone in any aspect when they act rudely. Call your date out on this behavior and you’ll soon get your answer as to whether or not this person ever wants to see you again.
